This past year TCLF held benefit events in San Francisco and Santa Barbara, California. As an integral part of these events, TCLF held its spring and fall board meetings. The board had the benefit of visiting over a dozen historically significant landscapes, accompanied by expert designers and scholars. The June tour in Lake Forest, IL, gardens and estates was led by Art Miller (co-author of Classic Country Estates of Lake Forest: Architecture and Landscape Design) and included designs by pioneering landscape architects Ellen Shipman, Charles Platt, Rose Standish Nichols, the Olmsted Brothers and Jens Jensen.

In the fall, the board meeting the tour was opened to local design and preservation professionals and included visits to great California gardens designed by Lockwood de Forest such as Constantia, Val Verde and Casa del Herrera (led by his son Kellham de Forest) as well as the Valentine Garden with Isabelle Green its designer.

 

West Coast Celebration
Spring 2003 / San Francisco, California

In the spring of 2003, garden designer and artist, Topher Delaney/S.E.A.M. Studio hosted an event at her Studio in San Francisco to present the work of TCLF to the West Coast. The evening's festivities included a lecture on the preservation of modern landscapes and the presentation of Stewardship Excellence Awards to Lawrence Halprin for his work on preserving modern landscape architecture in California , and to Sandra Donnell and Justin Faggioli for their ongoing stewardship of the Donnell Garden in Sonoma. There were one hundred attendees and the event raised funds for the Modern Garden Icons CLC project.



Mayor Daley's Greening Symposium
August 2003 / Chicago, Illinois

TCLF belatedly gave its second Stewardship Excellence Award to Mayor Richard Daley at his 2nd Annual Greening Symposium. CLF Co-Chair Jo Ann Nathan presented the Mayor with the award in August. As a result of the event, the CLC module received much local press in newspapers and television. (see, Cultural Landscapes as Classrooms, Columbus Park )

Santa Barbara Celebration at Val Verde
November 6, 2003 / Santa Barbara, California

A series of lectures, tours and meetings were held in concert with a benefit event held on November 6 th at Val Verde, the masterwork design of Lockwood de Forest. Over one hundred were in attendance for the gala evening to gain a preview of the CLC Modern Garden Icons project. The evening concluded with a presentation of Stewardship Excellence awards to the Austin Val Verde Foundation, the Casa del Herrera Foundation, and Kellham deForest.
