LETTER FROM CHAIRMEn

It is with great pleasure that we present the third annual report for The Cultural Landscape Foundation (CLF) for the year ending December 31, 2003. During 2003, TCLF continued to expand its programs and products enabling us to realize our mission of "stewardship through education." The following are our accomplishments for the past year:

For our signature Cultural Landscapes as Classrooms (CLC) series, the Foundation completed and web-posted its first CLC module, The Prairie Idealized: Columbus Park , while making great progress on our second module, City Shaping: The Olmsteds and Louisville. For the third planned module in the CLC series, Modern Garden Icons , TCLF videotaped interviews with Lawrence Halprin, Ted Osmundson and Walt Gutherie among other California-based, modern landscape practitioners.

In the publication department, TCLF completed editing two forthcoming books to be published over the next two years: Preserving Modern Landscape Architecture II: Making Post War Landscapes Visible (Spacemaker Press) and, If Only We Knew: Landscape Preservation in Context (University Press of Virginia).

TCLF conceived, designed, hosted or co-sponsored a variety of conferences and special events. This year, venues were held in Mason Neck, Virginia; Birmingham , Alabama ; Chicago , Illinois ; Providence , Rhode Island ; San Francisco and Santa Barbara , California. Although many of these events are described in detail in the report that follows, it is worth noting that the Foundation's conferences attracted sold-out audiences and resulted in a variety of offerings that are now hosted on our website. Examples include papers delivered at the Gunston Hall Conference, Mission Impossible , and commissioned stewardship stories that chronicle successful projects to preserve and rehabilitate important landscapes designed by Dan Kiley, Lawrence Halprin and Robert Royston among other leading post-war designers.

This past year, support for the Catalog of Landscape Records in the United States was terminated at Wave Hill. TCLF entered into a collaboration with the Bronx Botanical Gardens to insure continuity of the collection by dedicating a section of its website for posting future queries, working with the Catalog's founder, Catha Grace Rambusch, and the National Park Service's Historic Landscape Initiative on a new volume of Pioneers of American Landscape Design.

TCLF continued its Landslide program by posting updated status reports and related press about landscapes that were featured in our 2002 list, Designed Landscapes. TCLF began the process of selecting those sites that will be featured in our 2004 announcement.

Finally, none of our work could be realized without the continuing support of our donors and board. We are extraordinarily grateful for this assistance. We are pleased to welcome our new board members, Mary Ellen Flanagan, Mac K. Griswold, and Grant Jones.
