Artist Statement: Language is a form of control, expression, syntax meaning. I have spent the last thirty years learning languages which express physical forms within the context of cultural bias and values. I have purposely chosen languages which constantly shift syntax and meaning due to the implicit process of growth and decay. The installations I have presented are grounded in the culture of site installations, gardens, landscape architecture – frankly determined by the cultural values of the viewer. I have focused predominantly on this form of integrated expressions rather than stand alone sculpture because I view the total environment as a form of expression rather than creating an intervention within a site – such as a bronze horse or pieces of metal or paintings on a wall. Work only becomes “art” through critique and validation, when it is institutionalized by discourse. These installations are explorations of the site, the density of light – moisture – air, the density of development and the density of society in relationship to the cultural biases of the currency of “art.” To create these installations is to reference the world of phenomenology and spirituality where language is a means of communicating one’s experience of being in space and time.
