Lyle Gomes
Bio: Lyle Gomes has been a photographer and educator for over 25 years. In 2005, his study of idealized human-made landscapes was published by the University of Virginia Press as Imagining Eden: Connecting Landscapes. This long-term project was supported by both a Fulbright Scholar Award (Britain) and by the Rockefeller Foundation residency (Bellagio, Italy). His work can be found in numerous museums, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris; San Jose Museum of Art; Stanford Museum; and Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego. He continues to reside in the San Francisco Bay Area where he heads the photography program at the College of San Mateo.
Artist Statement: This photograph is from Imagining Eden, UVA Press, 2005. Imagining Eden is a study of an ideal, a mental image, rather than a specific place. These imaginative places, whether a city park, garden, cemetery, golf course, or military reservation, are an attempt at recovering a connection with nature lost with Eden. Although the photographs are drawn from several portfolios made over a 16 year period, Imagining Eden blends these diverse landscapes into a single place.
