Artist Statement: Fourth of July Roses, Tappen House, Little Compton. These David Austin roses, “Tess of the d'Urbervilles,” were grown by my wife Charlotte M. Frieze ASLA, the Garden Editor of House & Garden magazine. After a lovely holiday lunch, Charlotte cut a bouquet and surprised me with it in my studio. She arranged the roses on the old studio bench and I photographed her Fourth of July bouquet in raking late afternoon light.
