Michael Boice ASLA

Michael Boice, born in Albany, New York, in 1958, was indoctrinated into the Albany School of Art at the age of six and participated in the curriculum until the age of nine. Throughout high school, art and mechanical drawing were defining classes and, in 1979, Boice received a degree in Environmental Science from the State University of New York. Upon graduation, he pursued a degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Arizona. However, he withdrew from school in order to participate in bicycle racing in Europe. Boice continues to be passionate about representing natural harmonies in some form of art.

Artist's Statement:
"We are sometimes unaware of the simplicity hidden in behind complex natural systems, and how connected these are. Buried within the Nautilus is one of the most powerful, but simple mathematical equations, the Pythagorean Theorem. The length of two sides of each rectangle conform to the Fibonacci Scale and therefore the Pythagorean Theorem.

The major rectangular shapes beneath the Nautilus overlap to create secondary rectangular shapes, and, the three secondary colors. The proportions of the rectangles also conform to the proportions of the Pythagorean Theorem, and therefore, the Golden Mean. The Nautilus' shadow follow the exfoliating path of these rectangles. At yet another level, each primary and secondary color can be paired to vibrate, in angstroms, to the proportion of the Pythagorean Theorem…and the sound waves found in the series of musical notes A, B, Center C, D, E, F and G nearly mimic the wave length of the primary and secondary colors, plus one - indigo. I got goosebumps when I discovered that Center C vibrates at the same wavelength as the color green…the central color of our world..."
