John Paul Caponigro combines his background in painting with traditional and alternative photographic processes using the digital platform. He is respected internationally as one of the most prominent artists working with digital media processes. Caponigro’s work is exhibited internationally and resides in numerous private and public collections including Princeton University, the Estée Lauder collection, and the Smithsonian.

Caponigro teaches both privately in his studio and internationally at prominent workshops including The Santa Fe Photographic Workshops and The Maine Photographic Workshops. He lectures frequently at universities, museums, and conferences. John Paul’s work has been published widely. Reviews have appeared in numerous periodicals and books including Art News and The Ansel Adams Guide. In 2006, Caponigro was inducted into the Photoshop Hall of Fame.

Artist’s Statement
These surfaces were created by nature; a portion of them is beyond me and beckons me to expand my sensibilities. Yet the surfaces in these pictures are not untouched. I have altered them: by inclusion and exclusion, by changing proportion, by eliminating old and adding new elements, by creating a Rorshach pattern and placing its midpoint. I find this a most curious collaboration with the hand of nature.

As I am, it is natural that my work is concerned with the environment. Though I feel it is inevitable that my work will have political and social dimensions, these are not the impetus for it. My intentions are poetic, rather than political. My primary goal is to make images that resonate with meaning and ask questions. It is my hope that in addition to expressing a state of being and a conjunction of ideas, my work invokes a new line of inquiry for the viewer. For me, art does not stop at the surface of an art object but continues into our lives with the resonance it leaves within us and with each of our own unique internal contributions to the course of that energy.
