Perry Cardoza’s strength is his ideology of landscape architecture as the collaboration and harmonious synthesis of diverse disciplines addressing artistic design expression. Cardoza began his full-time affiliation with NUVIS after graduation in 1986. He took a three-year, international design sabbatical in Japan with two different firms during the early 1990s. During the sabbatical, Cardoza had the opportunity to design the 450-hectare Akashi Government Park; Kishiwada Port/Commercial District in Osaka; the 200-hectare Echigo National Government Park; and a 20-hectare seasonal garden highway oasis. In 1998, Cardoza received the Kobe, Best Design Award for Promenade Garden on Awaji Island, for this project. His creative talents have championed award-winning design competitions such as San Jose’s Monopoly-in-the-Park and Sunset Magazine’s Educational Garden at the Los Angeles County Arboretum. He became a NUVIS stockholder and Corporate Principal in 2002.
Artist’s Statement:
"While on sabbatical, working and living in Kobe, Japan, I developed a design for the Awaji Island Promenade Garden along with a fondness for the people and the City of Kobe. A year after the design was complete, I was back in the US when Kobe was devastated by the 1995 Earthquake. The people of Kobe had been so good to me through their friendships and my working relationship; I wanted to give something back. Japan’s International Garden-Design Competition extended a call for entries. As a tribute to the people of Kobe, I re-designed the Awaji Island Promenade Garden. The design concept, for a site that once served as my backyard, is centered on creating the opportunity for Kobe’s residents to make peace with the land."
