Linda Jewell
MLA, FASLA
Linda Jewell, educated as both a landscape architect and architect, has spent her academic and professional career investigating the relationship of structures and landscapes, particularly in outdoor theaters. Her built landscapes have been frequently published and recognized with numerous design awards from the ASLA. The focus of her scholarship has been in three areas: 1) The artistic role of landscape details in landscape design 2) The relationship of landscapes and structures and 3) The interplay of drawings and on-site design decisions in the design of landscapes.
Jewell has published more than thirty articles on landscape construction and design and has produced several exhibitions, including a traveling exhibition on American outdoor theaters. She presently is working on a book on American outdoor theaters and on a research project on the role of on-site design decisions by National Park Service designers in the construction of the 1930s Civilian Conservation Corps projects.
For thirty years, Jewell has combined an academic career with professional practice. She is currently a professor of Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning at the College of Environmental Design at the University of California, Berkeley, and continues to oversee her own private practice.
