Artist Statement: One of the great privileges of my work as a photographer of plants and gardens is being given access to beautiful places before the public are allowed in - or in this case before the owners wake up. I always prefer to be in place before dawn, ready and waiting when the light comes through. I selected this avenue because the owner, a huge contemporary dance enthusiast, had asked for the trees to be pruned in shapes that echoed the movement of dancers. The sun rose slowly after I arrived at this garden in the Hamptons on Long Island the light filtering through the leaves and gradually becoming more intense. The picture brings back the memory of an emotional moment when the light streamed though the trees. I'm in the hands of the gods when it comes to weather but this was a moment that worked - the sculpted trees became bathed in golden light.
