(threat continued)
Instead, as Stuart O. Dawson, a principal with Sasaki Associates
(who worked on this project 25 years ago), recently noted, "We
are in danger of losing our sense of history and continuity and
connectedness with the past when we say, simply, 'We're neglected
to maintain it, we might as well start over.' While there is certainly
room for change, improvement, refinement of the original design...as
there is with anything in the built environment after several decades
of use and changing needs...the proposed plan does not respect either
the original design or the historic and contextual underpinnings
to that design. The complete erasure of the existing park design
would mean the loss of a classic "modern" landscape...a
loss that should not be permitted."
