HALPRIN: HERITAGE PLAZA

(history continued)

The plaza contains a series of square "rooms" surrounded by several large water walls. Concrete walls separating it from Main and Belknap Streets to the south frame the entire plaza. Throughout the garden there are a series of channels that connect different parts of the water wall areas. The plaza is built on a slope and has different grade changes throughout allowing the water channels to change elevation and direction. The northern most portion of the garden provides a "cat walk" framed by water channels at both the ground plane level and shoulder height level. The catwalk, high above the slope and nestled within the trees, provides views to the Trinity River. There are two large lawn areas in the middle of the plaza containing mature Live Oak Trees planted on grid. Seating is provided in the form of concrete squares.

The primary focal feature of the garden is a square water feature spilling into a channel that runs in front of the main water wall. The main water wall contains an inscription "Embrace the Spirit and Preserve The Freedom Which Inspired Those of Vision and Courage To Shape Our Heritage". This inscription was included to represent the Heritage of Ft. Worth and the purpose of this garden. A second water wall off the west entrance contains an abstract representation of a "scale depiction of the Fort Worth Layout as submitted to Washington D.C. army headquarters on September 7th, 1853."
