(history continued)
As noted by Dina Sorensen in her recent research paper, "the fountain
is a classic Halprin gesture: a sculpture, a subject, an object, and proof
that the compositional landscape of the garden is a precisely controlled
set of formal references and a work of art unto itself." In recent
years, there have been complaints about Halprin's design including noise
of the fountain, lack of handicapped accessibility and difficulty in maintaining
the landscape. To combat the noise issue, the museum decided to cease
operation of the fountain rather than replace it with a refurbished, more
quietly operating system. Probably the most disappointing is the landscape
degradation that has resulted from poor maintenance planning and operation.
Today, Halprin's sculpture garden has not been revealed as a living work
of art that embeds the viewer deeply in metaphor. The result is a Modernist
design that is threatened with eradication
