HALPRIN: VIRGINIA MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS

Threat
The nationally recognized VMFA has expanded five times in the last 65 years. With collections exceeding 18,000 items in 380,000 square feet of space, the need for additional gallery space has prompted the museum administration to prepare for their largest expansion, which they hope will unify their 13-acre campus. However, unlike previous growth strategies, the museum's newest plan proposes demolition of potentially significant architectural and landscape features. If the museum's proposed master plan is executed, removal of Lawrence Halprin's Sculpture Garden and Hardwicke & Associates' North Wing are imminent.
