History
Savannah is one of a few American cities that retain their original colonial
plans. The 1733 plan was the vision of General James Oglethorpe, who persuaded
the Trustees of the Colony of Georgia to establish a city for the needy.
Oglethorpe developed a simple yet sophisticated design based on a square
within a square. This design gave Savannah proportionally more open space
than any town in American history. Savannah's open spaces also served
as a protection from fire, as the wide streets and parks made it difficult
for fire to spread from one area to another. The plan for Savannah was
a very practical one, after the fire of London in the preceding century.
