(history continued)
A rich environment with hundreds of historic structures listed on the
National Register that nestle around twenty-two public parks and squares,
Savannah represents a unique opportunity to protect an important legacy.
As one of the first preservation efforts in the mid-1960s, the city adopted
design guidelines, a model for historic districts throughout the nation.
Cities such as Savannah are continually assaulted with invasions into
its landscape - from strip malls and over-scaled signage to widening of
roads that results in the decline, demise and removal of the overarching
tree canopy that frames views and vistas and creates community character.
