Threat
Part of Savannah's charm and character stems from the hundreds of live
oak trees found throughout the city. Due to lack of knowledge and understanding,
these trees are frequently damaged and their life span cut short by improper
care, inappropriate new roadways, and the installation of communication
lines.

Historically, Savannah had the first Park and Tree Commission in America
and a pioneering tree conservation program. The early urban forest of
Savannah prospered in propitious conditions. Planted in the old city core,
the trees benefited from a high water table and surrounding roads built
with ancient methods that permitted air pockets and root space. In the
early neighborhood, the trees took nourishment and water from garden spaces
that fronted the houses and from the fact that in early developments top
soil was not removed to build subdivisions.
