“Good Books, Good Friends” Silent Auction Features More than 70 Personalized Works

Washington, D.C. (February 22, 2021) – The Cultural Landscape Foundation (TCLF) today announced that bidding is now open for “Good Books, Good Friends,” a special online silent auction featuring books by landscape architects, architects, photographers, and allied practitioners with inscriptions, autographs, sketches, watercolors, collages and other additions that make them unique collectors’ items. The auction runs through March 15 and bidding is done exclusively online.
Laurie Olin, Martha Schwartz, James Corner, Walter Hood, and Andrea Cochran are among more than 70 contributors to “Good books, Good Friends.” In addition, there are signed and inscribed legacy works by Lawrence Halprin, Thomas Church, A.E. Bye, Elizabeth deForest, and others.
Each donor has taken a distinct approach to the work they have provided. William “Bill” Johnson has created Seeing More a series of six volumes telling a story of the interplay between visual discovery and intellectual discovery. The volumes are housed in a custom-made wooden display box and are accompanied by two original paintings by Johnson. Landscape architect Robert Chipman has donated High Sierra from Cathedral Peak, a delicately wrought watercolor on accordion folded paper. Kate Orff collaborated with her daughter who has traced leaves in parts of All We Can Save: Truth, Courage, and Solutions for the Climate Crisis. Photographer Robert Burley and Walter Kehm have donated Accidental Wilderness: The Origins and Ecology of Toronto’s Tommy Thompson Park. The profusely illustrated book is supplemented with an original signed photograph by Burley and an exquisite original signed drawing by Kehm, all of which is housed in a linen-covered presentation case.
Designing a Vision by Janice Parker will be accompanied by a signed original painting by Robert Andrew Parker and an original photograph by Sandrine Lee; both works depict an iris featured in the book. Parker will also add a personalized inscription to the winning bidder. In Movement and Meaning: The Landscapes of Hoerr Schaudt, which explores 45 public, private, and cultural projects, Doug Hoerr, FASLA, has drawn an elaborate garden plan across two introductory pages. Meanwhile, in Coen + Partners Contextual Minimalism, Shane Coen, FASLA, has included detailed handwritten comments throughout the book providing behind the scenes accounts, personal anecdotes, and thoughts about the projects in the book.
