Landscape as Catalyst: Lawrence Halprin’s Legacy and Los Angeles

Los Angeles, CA

The Cultural Landscape Foundation, in collaboration with the A+D Architecture and Design Museum, is organizing a public, daylong symposium on November 4, 2017, that will examine the influences and accomplishments of renowned landscape architect Lawrence Halprin (1916 - 2009) and his impact on the renaissance of downtown Los Angeles. Held as part of a three-month series of public events honoring Halprin’s rich local and national legacy, this symposium will be suitable for enthusiasts of Modernist design and landscape architecture, practitioners and urban planners, fans of Los Angeles and those interested in the city's history, and others.

Halprin was among the foremost landscape architects of the twentieth century. His prolific career spanned more than six decades, with SoCal highlights that include the Los Angeles Open Space Network, Plaza Las Fuentes, Pasadena, CA, along with projects nationally such as the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, Washington, D.C., Freeway Park, Seattle, WA, and the Portland Open Space Sequence, Portland, OR. His firm was a seedbed for many talented designers now celebrated in their own right, and the innovative techniques he pioneered changed the field forever.

The cornerstone for these fall events is The Landscape Architecture of Lawrence Halprin, a traveling exhibition organized and curated by The Cultural Landscape Foundation that will appear at the Arts District’s A+D Architecture and Design Museum from October 1 through December 31, 2017. The exhibition features fifty-six newly commissioned photographs of Halprin’s work, including downtown L.A.’s Bunker Hill Steps and Plaza Las Fuentes in Pasadena. The traveling exhibition debuted in 2016 at the National Building Museum in Washington D.C in celebration of the 100th anniversary of Halprin’s birth.

The Cultural Landscape Foundation has also created a complementary website with additional photography of each of the sites featured in the exhibition, written recollections from Halprin’s friends and colleagues, and links to a video oral history with Halprin.  A fully illustrated, 92-page gallery guide is also available.
