New Richly Illustrated Online Guide to San Diego – Features Dozens of Sites throughout “America’s Finest City”

New Guide released in advance of What’s Out There Weekend San Diego October 26-27 featuring free, expert-led tours, organized by The Cultural Landscape Foundation

Washington, DC (October 17, 2019) – The Cultural Landscape Foundation (TCLF) today announced the launch of a new online What’s Out There San Diego guidethe seventeenth in an ongoing series of richly illustrated digital guides to cities and regions throughout North America. The What’s Out There San Diego guide is being released in advance of What’s Out There Weekend San Diego on October 26-27, featuring free, expert-led tours of more than two dozen sites throughout the region.  Expert guides provide rich stories, personal anecdotes, and keen observations about each site, all while imparting knowledge of landscape architecture, city shaping, and garden design. The What’s Out There Weekend San Diego will also be complemented by a printed guidebook to all of the tour sites (which is available for purchase at TCLF’s website and as a free, downloadable PDF). 

The new online What’s Out There San Diego guide the latest expansion of the free, profusely illustrated What’s Out There online database of North America’s shared landscape legacy, which currently features more than 2,000 sites, 1,100 designer profiles and 12,000 images. The database is fully optimized for iPhones and similar handheld devices and is linked to What’s Nearby, a GPS-enabled function that locates all landscapes within a given distance of the user, customizable by mileage or walking time. The What’s Out There San Diego guide features an extensive introduction to the region’s landscape legacy, 46 well-illustrated site essays, and 28 designer profiles, and it will continue to grow with the addition of new material.

What’s Out There Weekend San Diego tours on October 26-27 are free, but registration is required, and space is limited.  Tour highlights include Liberty Station with Wayne Donaldson (Advisory Council on Historic Preservation); Friendship Park on the US/Mexico Border with Rania Theodosi of Studio West Landscape Architecture and Planning and Maria Theresa Fernandez of Friends of Friendship Park; Northwest Balboa with Park Paul Johnson (Johnson & Johnson Architecture) and Vonn Marie May (Cultural Land Planning & Research); Barrio Logan Cultural Landscapes with UCSD Professor Lawrence Herzog, Joseph Martinez of Martinez + Cutri Corporation, and muralist Victor Ochoa.
