W. Fitzhugh BrundageFitz Brundage is the William B. Umstead Professor of History at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He has written on lynching, socialism, and historical memory in the American South, and he is the author of the forthcoming “Civilizing Torture: An American Tradition,” a history of torture in the United States from the age of contact to the War on Terror.  His interest in cultural landscapes led him to create, with others, “Commemorative Landscapes of North Carolina,” a curated digital inventory of monuments in North Carolina.
