Founded by former U.S. President Thomas Jefferson in 1819, the University of Virginia is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its iconic red brick buildings and white columns were inspired by Greco-Roman architecture and Italian Renaissance architect Andrea Palladia, according to the Cultural Landscape Foundation.
