Bridging the Nature-Culture Divide III: Saving Nature in a Humanized World

The 80,000-acre Golden Gate National Recreation Area contains some of the nation’s most significant natural and designed landscapes. Managing this expansive cultural landscape is complex and costly. Among the greatest management challenges is addressing the park’s inherent natural, scenic and cultural assets, while also mediating the often-passionate constituencies that represent them. In this conference, landscape architects, ecologists, journalists, academics, managers of similarly diverse systems and other professionals will address sustainability, the agendas of different constituencies, diversity, the role of people, and public education. This follows up on the sold out similarly themed conferences held in 2012 in conjunction with the Central Park Conservancy in New York City, and 2011 at the Jay Heritage Center in Rye, New York.
Prosecco and a Private Visit to Alcatraz Island and the new Ai Weiwei installation

The conference kicks off with a sunset ferry ride to Alcatraz Island and a private visit to the site-specific exhibition @Large: Ai Weiwei on Alcatraz. Attendees will discover the island's layered legacy, hear compelling stories about its history and residents, and learn about the architecture, wildlife, and landscape all while enjoying a glass of Prosecco and world-class views of the Golden Gate and City at sunset. Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei, internationally renowned for work that defies the distinction between art and activism, has created an installation with seven large-scale sculpture, sound, and mixed-media site-specific artworks in four places on the island.
Post-Conference Reception

A post-conference reception will be held at the California Historical Society located in downtown San Francisco. The reception will include a private visit to the exhibition Yosemite: A Storied Landscape, held on the 150th anniversary of the Yosemite Grant. Rare photographs, art and artifacts share the tales and reveal the history of the Yosemite Valley. Ticket sales will benefit the educational programs of both the California Historical Society and TCLF.

More than a traditional tour, these mobile workshops will engage participants in a dialogue about the Presidio of San Francisco. In the course of both forums, participants will address issues of resource management – both cultural and natural – contemporary design in a National Historic Landmark District, community outreach, stewardship, and programming.

New to the Presidio? Discover its nearly 240-year history in an exclusive two-hour motorcoach tour that covers its Spanish settlement through two centuries as a military post to its present status as a national park. The Presidio is one of the world's most beautiful and celebrated locations and a model for 21st century thinking about preservation and reuse. Participants could then join one of the afternoon tours.
