Leading with Landscape II: The Houston Transformation Conference

-
Houston, TX

On March 11, 2016,The Cultural Landscape Foundation (TCLF) will present Leading with Landscape II: The Houston Transformation. The conference—presented in collaboration with local partners and public-private partnerships— will examine the landscape legacy of Houston, Texas, and will explore the national (and international) implications of the design work currently happening there.

Why Houston?  Encircled and traversed by ribbons of highways, Houston’s highly urbanized landscape comprises parks, university campuses, suburbs, and public open spaces spanning the Picturesque, Beaux-Arts, and Modernist styles amidst dense residential, commercial, and industrial enclaves. These often abut one another in delightfully awkward juxtapositions. Topics to be examined include the Bayou City’s rich and complex cultural, historical, and ecological narratives and its unrivaled collection of new works.

The conference, which will be held in the Brown Auditorium Theater at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, will feature a multidisciplinary panel that will discuss and debate the influences of culture, history, and nature in the evolving Houston cityscape. This will be followed on Saturday and Sunday by What's Out There Weekend Houston, featuring free, expert-led tours of some 30 sites—a number of which will be led by conference presenters.
