For Jonathan Fargion, landscape elements are treated as architecture. His goal of fusing architecture with landscape design—shaped by his upbringing and training in Milan, an iconic hub for elegant design—informs his work at Modernista Garden in New Canaan, Connecticut. In a town renowned for its concentration of mid-century Modernist houses designed by the influential architects known as the Harvard Five, Fargion’s landscape offers a distinctive contemporary perspective: a garden conceived not as a backdrop to architecture, but as a series of spatial experiences that shape how the property is approached and inhabited.

Register now for this exclusive Garden Dialogue with Jonathan Fargion Design and explore this newly constructed landscape, which balances bold, spatial gestures with carefully choreographed garden experiences.

Completed just last year, the 2-acre property was designed entirely from scratch, allowing Fargion to sculpt the landscape as a series of outdoor rooms. The entry sequence begins with a walkway defined by parallel stepping stone and lined with nine serviceberry trees. These plantings create a natural colonnade, beyond which frame a carpet of ornamental grasses and seasonal plantings providing year-round interest. The backyard opens into a lush lawn articulated by native tree plantings, creating a sense of enclosure for each room while drawing attention toward a custom metal sculpture designed by Fargion himself.

Attendees will explore each carefully curated space, including the East Side Garden Room—an outdoor family gathering area defined by a sculptural concrete retaining wall inspired by the work of Italian architect Carlo Scarpa. Nearby, a dense wall of hornbeam trees forms a natural screen for the pool area, where a smooth stone deck and pool house echo the tones and textures of the surrounding landscape.
