When the accomplished figurative sculptor won the competition for the World War I memorial in Washington D.C., Charles A. Birnbaum, president of The Cultural Landscape Foundation, asked the crucial questions we need to ask here: “Did the memorial leverage the power of place in which it now resides?” Did it succeed in integrating itself in a place that serves both tourists and residents?
