For Stillmeadow, a 21-acre property in Bundoran Farm, a 2,300-acre conservation-focused community outside of Charlottesville, Grounded  and Rosney Architects worked together from the outset of design. Their close collaboration created a harmonious integration of indoor and outdoor space, with the custom-built home and its surrounding landscape taking best advantage of the topography and views of the existing terrain while causing minimal land disturbance.

Views from the home are directed outward, across the landscape to a nearby saddle framed by two mountains. A gentle cut into the sloping hillside receives the house and parking court at the front, while fill to the rear forms a plinth lawn that takes advantage of the dramatic view.

Grounded emphasized the property's environmental context by predominately featuring native plant materials. Throughout the site, vernacular materials were used to define and ornament garden rooms. Stone farm walls mark the cut and filled areas of the hillside. To the north and south terrace gardens flank the plinth: a stone fire pit the focal point of one, while a farmhouse fountain dominates the other. Above the terrace, flower beds, cutting gardens and a vegetable garden give the owner, an avid gardener, ample space and material for cultivation and experimentation. A nut grove and orchard produce year-round abundance, and meadow wildflowers attract pollinators and wildlife.
