Capitalizing on a multitude of scenic natural features and mountain views was the starting point for the master plan of this 175-acre site in Albemarle County. The design scope included siting a main house, a guest cottage, and a chapel, along with several landscape elements including trails, sheep paddocks and and meadows, while respecting and accentuating the agricultural history of the land.

The landscape surrounding the house prioritizes the expansive western view. A series of terraced gardens opening up to the mountains gently navigate from the house down to various outbuildings and trails. To the west of the house, an arced path highlights the knoll landform and demarcates an area around the house where lawn may one day transition into meadow.

The preservation of several mature specimen trees (more than a hundred years old) that surrounded the previous residence was critical to the landscape design, contributing both scale and shade to the newly constructed home. A oval lawn punctuated by a stately beech tree marks the site of the previous structure.

Further afield, a large, degraded pond was restored to its original stream condition with several acres of reforestation and restoration planting. Several miles of walking and mountain biking trails also wind throughout the property, offering boundless opportunities for exploration and discovery.
