On September 10, 2026, nearly 100 people gathered at the Exhibition Space at ABC Stone in Brooklyn, New York, for the opening reception of The Landscape Architecture of Lawrence Halprin, a traveling photographic exhibition about the life and work of landscape architect Lawrence Halprin produced by The Cultural Landscape Foundation (TCLF). Following the success of the opening, the exhibition has been extended through the end of November.

It is fitting that after being exhibited across the United States over the last decade, the exhibition is coming to a close in Brooklyn, where Halprin was born and raised. The show features 56 commissioned images by leading landscape photographers of dozens of Halprin’s major works, including his early residential projects; the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial in Washington, D.C.; and capstone projects such as the Yosemite Falls Corridor and Sigmund Stern Grove in San Francisco.

Attendees of the opening were treated to an engaging presentation by TCLF President Charles A. Birnbaum, FASLA, who co-curated the exhibition. Birnbaum shared personal anecdotes about Halprin and how his projects have been stewarded over the decades. He was joined virtually by landscape architect Ken Smith, FASLA, whose practice—like Halprin’s—blends landscape, architecture, art, and urbanism.

Following the event, Lyndsey Belle Tyler, Creative Director of ABC Stone, remarked on Halprin’s legacy as a designer. “Lawrence Halprin designed for the body in motion. He understood that a plaza or a fountain isn't complete when the last stone is set. It's complete when people arrive: when they climb it, linger on its edges, and let their children wade in. That idea feels urgent now, when so much of daily life has moved to screens and so many of the public landscapes he gave us are at risk.” She also spoke to how he has directly inspired her and her colleagues, sharing that “As a stone company, we think constantly about permanence. Halprin reminds us that permanence means nothing without use. Presenting his work with TCLF is our way of saying these spaces are meant to be lived in, and they're worth fighting for."
