Sprawling across five acres of picturesque pastureland, this landscape was recently transformed to reflect the needs and unique interests of the client’s family. Join TCLF for an exclusive tour led by Eric D. Groft, FASLA of D.C.-based landscape architecture firm Oehme, van Sweden, as they examine Tango House’s geometric layout, panoramic views, and innovative design.

Visitors are guided to the main entrance via a grass-banked pathway of interlocking smooth and roughhewn stones. Just before the front door, the stones cross a long, rectangular pond fed by an adjacent waterfall.

Directly behind the home is a luxurious spa situated on a semi-circular wooden deck overlooking a sloping, grassy path, intermittently punctuated by narrow stone steps, that leads to the rest of the backyard.

Here, the centerpiece of the undulating terrain is the swimming pool, flagstone patio, and cabana. Fed by three water spouts set in a rusticated granite wall running the length of the patio, cascading water flows over a custom, Italian-made glass wall at one end of the pool.  At night, the water shimmers in the light of a nearby fire bowl.

Just beyond the pool, an opening in the low, stone wall leads to an intimate open-air dance floor warmed by an outdoor fireplace.

The home’s contemporary architecture and use of warm and cool materials complement the lush landscape of native plantings and surrounding woodlands. Winding, angular stone pathways traverse the property, creating viewsheds of the picturesque rural scenery.
